When I first heard about this I gave her the benefit of the doubt considering I only heard the comment about "raising him like a White kid" and treating him like an accessory. I actually thought this was on point because I still believe that Black and Brown children are treated more harshly for the same behavior that White children get away with. I didn't take it as her saying that the child needed to be violently punished, but rather he needs to be more disciplined than his peers. Perhaps that's an old school way of thinking that I need to let go of.
However, all the other statements that have come to light paint a broader picture that is problematic. It shows that people of color still have to deal with the issues of colorism and racism within their own communities.
