In my opinion the boundaries between work and personal life eroded 20 years ago, especially in the tech industry. I was spending long hours at the office, working weekends, answering messages and updating servers overnight, addressing "emergencies." Once I came to work and saw the Blackberry sitting on my desk, I knew any sense of boundaries was over.

Remote work was a bit challenging at first, especially since that was coupled with a small child that had to be pulled out of daycare and fooling myself into thinking my wife and I could juggle that responsibility with getting work done day to day. But once he started back at daycare and we got into a routine, I can say I'm more productive at home, especially since I'm just in a different point in my life. Our schedule really revolves around our child's school and activities. And I no longer see any benefit to the social aspect of being in the office since I'm past the point of going out for lunches or happy hours.

Now the thought of having to spend 2 hours a day commuting and rushing to get back home to do the afternoon activities just means more late night work and taking my work laptop with me everywhere. I'm wiling to spend time in an office, but not 5 days a week. I guess it's time to start playing the lottery so we can just get out of the rat race.
