I think the problem with merit is that White men (in the U.S. at least) are still the ones mainly determining it.

I sometimes wish there was a way for everyone to start at the bottom with the same resources and see who rises to the top. That's a true merit system. But that's impossible. Professional sports is about as close as we'll ever get.

I don't think trying to spread equity is the answer either but we don't live in a system that truly rewards the hardest working or smartest.
