I think that attitude is the one that’s actually naive. White children can more easily be shielded from this reality because they don’t experience it and are more likely to not know anyone who does. I remember how ignorant people were about anything that didn’t revolve around White people and White-centered history when I moved to a “better” neighborhood in high school. They had the luxury of not having to think about it. Now children have access to infinitely more information and their parents are actively trying to stop them from knowing about other people’s experiences, maybe even their fellow students. My kid doesn’t get to be naive if he wants to know about his family as well as people that look like him.
