I get what you're saying about being old and irrelevant to my child. But even at 5 years old he does have questions about slavery and racism because that's the experience of a lot of the historical figures we learn about. Of course he doesn't have the context but he still wants to know why people were treated differently based on skin color. I am not raising him to be color blind because the world is certainly not blind to his color. This isn't about what music or movies I think are cool compared to what he consumes. This is history and family we're talking about. Yes, most of it will be ancient history to him but right now he is asking questions about our family history and I'm not going to sugarcoat it. As much as we want to think of certain things as being a long time ago, my child is only 2 generations removed from Jim Crow life in Mississippi.

"We do The Talk about sex. You do The Talk about race as well as sex."

Why can't you talk about race as well? Too many White people grow up not knowing the experiences of people who don't look like them and it's easy for them to dismiss or gaslight others' experiences. You're doing it right now.
