I can’t answer that. But you have to consider that a lot of Americans (like myself) are only one generation away from Jim Crow. The civil rights movement wasn’t that long ago. And it’s not as if people suddenly changed attitudes right after that. So the trauma of our ancestors continues because we are still living it. I am conscious of it and I know my children will have a better experience than I did and certainly better than their grandparents who knew life in pre Civil Rights era Mississippi. But I am not naive about the inevitability of my children facing racism. And I will be sure they know about the past experiences of their family and not let anyone diminish that history just because they can’t or refuse to relate.
