Furthermore, as much as we talk about the U.S. becoming more "diverse" there's still the fact that we are very segregated when it comes to personal relationships. A poll in 2014 found that 75% of White people had no non-White friends. And in general, White children go to schools that are 77% White. This is a little dated and I'm not saying that other ethnic groups don't also generally have friends of the same race. However, I think a common lack of empathy or understanding on the part of White people towards issues faced by minorities in this country stems from the fact that they don't really know anyone dealing with them. They can probably point to a few acquaintances or neighbors but probably not anyone who is a true friend. I think minorities have an advantage in this regard as the history and experiences of White people dominate our media and culture. We know them but they don't know us.
