Fortunately, Luke's character arc was well fleshed out in the books that followed the original trilogy. His journey to becoming a grand master definitely showed him maturing and coming a long way from that whiny kid on Tatooine.

UNfortunately, all that was thrown away by the crappy Disney trilogy so now his legacy has become that of a grumpy old, blue milk drinking, cynic who faded away because he couldn't be bothered to hop in his X-Wing to help his friends.
