Apple has a point about all the third-party accessories that use the lightning port becoming obsolete. However, this wouldn’t happen overnight as this potentially would only affect the iPhones and iPads that come out next year. People aren’t upgrading as frequently and if it’s just for charging then most people won’t really be “hurt” by this. So people will complain for a few years and then get over it like we did last time they changed the port.
I’m not sure what innovation Apple says could be hindered by standardizing since they’re moving towards wireless everything anyway. But it’s something they could have done with the last generation of iPhones and iPads and we’d be over it by now.
